This week was a busy week with lots of activities. On Monday we weighed the sheep and cows for the study we are doing at WMREC. Cole and his mentor from Frederick county joined us and spent the rest of the afternoon helping us fix fencing and then we all had a conference call. Tuesday, we weighed Jersey calves at a local farm for another study we are working on. On Wednesday, we attended a Pasture Walk in Knoxville at Peace Hollow Farm. Their cows are only grazed on pasture. The hay that they make from the pasture is also fed to the cows when they come off pasture as well. Thursday, we traveled to CMREC to weigh heifers for a third study we have going on. On Friday, we got the opportunity to go to Lykens Valley Bison in PA and attended a Pasture Walk there.
A little background about me. I grew up in Boonsboro on my great grandfather's farm land. I was involved in 4-H from a young age and showed up until I aged out. I started getting involved in Farm Bureau during high school and am still involved now. My junior year of high school was when I knew that I wanted to stay involved in agriculture as a career. I wanted to give back to a community that heavily influenced me and shaped me growing up. My goal is to do the same for others after college.
This internship has already taught me a lot in just these two weeks. I am learning so much from farmers and other professionals in the industry. Everyday I get to see how people solve problems and work together as a whole. This is such a neat group of people to work with and I see first hand how farmers are working with others to better improve their business. People are always sharing new information with each other and they are just simply looking to help one another out. I feel blessed to be afforded this opportunity and learn from some of the best.
