Week Five with Extension by Emily Stamper

Not all weeks are perfect and this week certainly showed that. We have been battling with pink eye in some of our cows here at WMREC and some were treated last week. Monday, Amanda and I went out to check on the herd and fix some fencing. To our surprise, we had more cows that had gotten pink eye, and on top of that, one of our sheep passed away. On Wednesday, we further treated the pink eye and put fly tags on the cows as well as a pour on fly spray to help with the flies. Thursday, at CMREC, we took forage samples and set up some more polywire. Friday was spent weighing dried forage samples and taking all the old samples to the compost pile.

Being in agriculture is not always easy. We thought that this week was going to be more of a lowkey week in the office to be able to catch up on some things. That was not the case, and we had to adapt to fixing situations. We spent almost all day Wednesday dealing with the pink eye on top of the list of things that needed to be fixed. Life is all about being able to be adaptable. We were able to identify the problem, find a solution, and work together to execute it. We went out to check on the herd and luckily they were starting to look much better.

In our weekly connections, we discussed vision statements. My vision statement was “To be the best version of myself and to always strive for excellence in everything that I do. I want to constantly learn because I believe that there is always knowledge to acquire.” I am a perfectionist and I always try to go above and beyond. I feel like I let myself and others down when I do not try my best. Therefore, my goal is to always try for the best I can do. We never stop learning in life. My mother always said that “Your education is something that no one can ever take away from you.” A life that is not spent learning and growing, is a life of wasted potential.
