My name is Byron Thibodeaux, Jr from Welsh, Louisiana. I am
currently attending Southern A&M University seeking an undergraduate degree in Agriculture Economics. I am working this summer as an intern for the University of Maryland Extensions Program. This internship involves assisting agronomic variety trials and other field research by assembling data according to specific instructions. It includes assisting with local extension demonstrations and participation in field days hosted by UME and other partners. The internship requires an end-of-the-internship presentation to the industry and extension professionals regarding your experience in the program. My goal is to become an expert in the agriculture business field and utilize my skills for potential careers in commodity traders, wholesale buying, corporate management, specialists in crop consulting, real estate appraisal, and work with government agencies. I have the pleasure of learning and connecting throughout my internship with my mentor, Ms. Fiorellino. She is amazing and her guidance, advice, feedback, and support are phenomenal. Ms. Fiorellino ensures I am involved and comfortable throughout the internship. During this internship, I will be working multiple projects. My first project has already been assigned and consists of organizing historic crop yield data. I will be aiding the project by converting the data from her historic yield data onto a spreadsheet template. From there the creation of general graphs will occur to look at the trends. Another project I will be working on includes the development of hemp crop budgets. This project includes multiple parts associated with hemp and crop budgets.
As I experience the opportunity of being a member of the University of Maryland Extension Programs staff, contributions to my interactions with peers and colleagues have occurred allowing me to see this overall experience fitting into my education positively. The new information and experiences I have been able to read over about the University of Maryland have created a visualization of productivity about how this experience will fit into my life. The connection with my mentor created sights of encouragement about how this experience will fit into my future.
